Stomach pain in children is common — but sometimes it is a sign of something serious. Appendicitis is one condition that every parent should know how to recognise.

What is Appendicitis?

The appendix is a small finger-like organ attached to the large intestine. When it becomes inflamed or infected, it causes appendicitis. If untreated, the appendix can rupture and cause a life-threatening infection.

Signs of Appendicitis in Children

  • Pain that starts around the belly button and then shifts to the lower right side of the abdomen
  • Fever (usually mild to moderate)
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Pain that worsens when your child walks or moves
  • In younger children: persistent crying, inability to stand straight, or guarding of the tummy

When is it an Emergency?

If your child has severe abdominal pain, high fever, and vomiting together — do not wait. Go to a hospital immediately. A ruptured appendix is a medical emergency. The window to act is typically 24–72 hours from symptom onset.

What Does the Surgery Involve?

Appendix removal (appendicectomy) is one of the most common emergency surgeries in children. It is performed laparoscopically (3 small cuts) under general anaesthesia and takes about 45–60 minutes. Children typically stay in hospital for 1–3 days.

Recovery

Most children recover fully in 1–2 weeks after laparoscopic surgery. If the appendix had already ruptured, recovery may take longer. Your child can return to school in about 2 weeks.
