Preparing Your Child for Surgery: A Parent’s Guide from Consultation to Recovery
Knowing your child needs surgery is never easy. But good preparation can make a world of difference for both you and your child. Here’s a step-by-step guide I share with all my patients’ families:
1. Explain the surgery in simple words
Avoid scary terms. Use gentle language like “the doctor will help fix what’s troubling your tummy.” Children often understand more than we think.
2. What to pack
Pack your child’s favorite toy or blanket, a change of clothes, snacks for afterward, and all medical records.
3. Follow fasting instructions strictly
Fasting (no food or drink for a few hours) is critical for safe anesthesia. Stick to your doctor’s guidelines strictly.
4. Prepare emotionally
Reassure your child that you’ll be there before and after surgery. Tell them it’s okay to feel nervous.
5. After surgery – What to expect
Mild drowsiness, soreness, and grogginess are common. Let your child rest and avoid heavy play for a few days.
6. Follow-up and medications
Complete the prescribed medicines and don’t skip the follow-up visit. Watch for signs of infection or pain.
Helping your child feel calm and safe starts with your confidence. We’re here to support you through every step.
